Halloween
Halloween is said to have pagan roots, but it is a funny celebration. Trick-or-treating is a usual celebration on Halloween. Children go from house to house, asking for candy or money:
“Trick or treat?”
The word “trick” means “to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given. Children perform some sort of trick, i.e. sings a song or tells a ghost story, to earn their treats. The pumpkin is used at Halloween. It is easy to carve. Subsequently, pumpkins have become universally available for this purpose. The American tradition of carving pumpkins is recorded in 1837.
Black and orange are the holiday’s traditional colors. Halloween costumes are traditionally made after monsters, ghosts, skeletons, witches, and devils. Over the last decades the costume selection has included characters from fiction, celebrities, and generic archetypes such as ninjas and princesses. Halloween costume parties generally take place on or around October the 31st, often on the Friday or Saturday before Halloween. At such parties they often tell one another ghost stories and watch horror films.
